“Involving all stakeholders in the ongoing search for consensus”:
this is the mission of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), enshrined in its statutes since 1999.

This mission is rooted in the creation of PEFC as an international recognition system and ensures sustainable forest management in all its dimensions through recognized national and regional systems.

In the Congo Basin, this approach is implemented through the Congo Basin PAFC (Pan African Forest Certification), a regional forest certification system developed to be adapted to the ecological, social, and economic realities of tropical forests. Recognized by PEFC, the Congo Basin PAFC allows certified companies to market their products under the PEFC label and ensure their international recognition.

PEFC-PAFC OBJECTIVES

  • The societal dimension of forests, with increased awareness since the end of the 20th century. PEFC–PAFC helps protect people who live in, work in, or depend on forests by promoting responsible and inclusive practices.
  • The environmental dimension of forests, which has become central in the face of biodiversity loss and the climate emergency. Certified forests are recognized as essential reservoirs of biodiversity and carbon sinks, contributing to climate change mitigation and the preservation of tropical forest ecosystems.
  • Finally, the economic dimension, through the production function of forests. By responding to growing demand for wood as a material and for wood energy, PEFC–PAFC certification supports the rational and sustainable management of resources, while contributing to the economic development of forest areas.
