Preservation of the Kevazingo species in Gabon

As reported by the website Gabon Review, the capacity building project for the effective involvement of non-state actors in the preservation of Kevazingo welcomed community observers from the provinces of Woleu-Ntem and Ogooué-Ivindo last March for the establishment of a network of independent forest observers.

Preservation of the Kevazingo species in Gabon

Started in Gabon about 8 months ago, the project of "Capacity building for an effective involvement of the non-state actors in the preservation of Kevazingo", registered as part of the FAO-EU FLEGT Program of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, has recently organized a meeting for the benefit of the communities of the provinces of Woleu-Ntem and Ogooué-Ivindo

It was a training organized by the NGO Brainforest in order to help the 20 participants (17 men and 3 women) to implement a network of observers and to promote a capitalization of the experiences between the local observers. Several issues were addressed during these exchanges: the evaluation of observers' strengths and weaknesses; the identification of points on which observers would like to see their capacities further strengthened.

The overall objective was to contribute to improving the legal framework for the exploitation of Kevazingo in order to achieve effective implementation of sustainable management of this species, through the involvement of non-state actors.

The FAO-EU FLEGT Program is funded by the European Union, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, and the UK Commonwealth Foreign and Development Office.
