The Republic of Suriname, of which nearly 95% of the territory is covered by forest, wishes to develop its forestry economy and draw inspiration from the Gabonese model. A delegation from Suriname visited the Nkok Special Economic Zone in mid-March.
As relayed by Le Nouveau Gabon, the Gabonese Minister of Water and Forests, Pr Lee White and his counterpart from Suriname, Dinotha Vorswijk, signed on March 18, 2022 in Libreville a letter of intent to seal the cooperation of the two countries for the management of their forest resources. According to Pr Lee White, through this signature, Gabon and Suriname commit to work together to exchange information and data on their forest policies and sustainable forest management.
This initiative strengthens the relationship between the two countries in the areas of forest policy and legislation, nature and payments for forest carbon sequestration and other ecosystem services related to tropical forests.
The signing of this letter of intent comes at the end of the visit of the parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Suriname to Gabon. After its working visit to the Nkok SEZ, the delegation met with various Gabonese authorities.
